They pose unique challenges to professionals practicing in maternal and public health. This thesis has avoided discussing a sphere that is not discussed much: the emergency and disaster preparedness of midwives and public health specialists within a country's crisis response, including care within conflict areas, for refugees, and natural disasters. The case studies of current disasters will show how readiness, speedy response, and incorporating maternal health services into the emergency care system support the ability to provide universal access to necessary care for the population.
